Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has offered his condolences to Ghana following a helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two senior ministers.
The Ghana Air Force helicopter, a Harbin Z-9, crashed on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Ashanti region of Ghana.
The aircraft was traveling from Accra to the gold-mining town of Obuasi for an event on illegal mining when it went off the radar. The wreckage was later found with all eight occupants dead.
The victims included:
1. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence
2. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment
3.Muniru Mohammed, acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
4. Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress party
5.Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
6.Three crew members of the Ghana Air Force
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his and the Nigerian people's "thoughts and prayers" with Ghana during this "profound national loss."
He urged the Ghanaian people and the bereaved families to find comfort in the fact that their loved ones "died in the line of patriotic service to the country." Tinubu also prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed and for strength for those they left behind.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
