The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is actively trying to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for president on its platform in the 2027 election.
According to a report by The Newsmen, citing a BBC Hausa service report, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed these efforts.
Abdullahi stated that the party is inviting Jonathan back because "many Nigerians are also making similar calls." He praised Jonathan as a statesman and a good leader, highlighting his peaceful concession in the 2015 election to avoid bloodshed.
The report indicates that Jonathan has responded positively to the invitation, stating he will "ponder and consult about it to make a decision." One of the conditions he reportedly gave was the assurance of an automatic ticket if he accepts to run.
The PDP's efforts to court Jonathan have included some governors reportedly traveling with him to The Gambia, where he attended a function.
This move by the PDP is also seen as a potential alternative to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, amid concerns about his commitment to rejoining the PDP.
Some party members are said to favor Jonathan because, having served one term, he would only be eligible for one more, which would avoid potential political conflicts over a second term and open up the field for other aspirants in 2031.
