Justice Served: Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi Sentenced to Death

The husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu has been sentenced to death by hanging.

On Monday, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, delivered the final verdict: Peter Nwachukwu was found guilty of causing his wife’s death.

Osinachi, known for her angelic voice and uplifting songs, passed away on April 8, 2022. Her death shocked the nation, and soon after, heartbreaking stories emerged of the alleged abuse she faced at home.

Peter Nwachukwu was brought to court by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on June 3, 2022, facing a heavy 23-count charge.

These charges included culpable homicide, spousal abuse, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation.

During the trial, the prosecution built a strong case, calling 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s own children.

The court also saw 25 different documents as evidence.

Peter Nwachukwu tried to defend himself, even bringing four witnesses and four documents to support his side of the story.

But the judge was not convinced.

Before the final sentencing, Peter’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, asked the court for mercy.

On the other side, the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to strictly follow the law.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme ultimately ruled that the evidence was overwhelming.

Peter Nwachukwu was sentenced to death by hanging for Count 1 (culpable homicide).

In addition, he received:

Two years in prison each for Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18,

Six months in prison for Count 10,

Three years in prison for Count 11,

Fines of ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 for Counts 6 and 7.

This judgment brings a sense of closure to Osinachi’s fans and loved ones, who have long hoped for justice in her name.

Her voice may be gone, but her story has sparked a deeper conversation about protecting victims of domestic violence in Nigeria and beyond.
