What you Need to Know About Easter!
Easter is the heart of the Christian year. A time of hope, renewal, and celebration. It begins with the solemn days of Holy Week, travels through ancient myths of spring, and blooms into a festival of eggs, bunnies, and family fun. From the goddess Eostre’s springtime feasts to the giant chocolate eggs of today, Easter’s story spans centuries and cultures, always landing on the Sunday after the full moon following March 21.
Each Easter season starts with the Holy Week, the seven days that lead to Easter Sunday. It starts on Palm Sunday, marking Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, moves through Thursday (the Last Supper), and Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion, and finally reaches the joy of Easter Sunday—Christ’s resurrection and the end of Lent’s forty days . In many places, Good Friday is even a state holiday, giving families a long weekend to reflect and rejoice .
Long before churches sprang up, people in Northern Europe honored Eostre, the Anglo‑Saxon goddess of spring, hares, and eggs . Over time, her name merged with the Christian festival of Christ’s rebirth—and so “Easter” was born .
Eggs have been ancient symbols of life for millennia—found in Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, and Roman spring celebrations . In medieval Europe, eggs were forbidden during Lent, making them a prized treat on Easter morning . Meanwhile, the Easter Bunny (originally the German “Oschter Haws”) hopped into children’s hearts centuries ago, hiding colorful eggs in nests to reward good behavior .
Easter today blends ancient customs with modern delights:
• Egg hunts in backyards and parks
• Easter baskets overflowing with candy
• The White House Easter Egg Roll, where kids race wooden eggs across the lawn
• And even record‑breaking chocolate eggs—the tallest measured 10.39 m (34 ft 1 in) and weighed over 7,200 kg, built in Italy in 2011 !
Easter’s date isn’t fixed. Since 325 AD, church leaders decided it would fall on the first Sunday after the full moon on or after March 21, the spring equinox . That means each year Easter can leap anywhere between March 22 and April 25, keeping us on our toes!
Easter’s magic is all about new life and sweet surprises.
Now that you know all about Easter,
Happy Easter to all and may your days be filled with joy, love, and the promise of new beginnings!
